Assistant Cutter - Ladies Costume
We currently have a vacancy for an Assistant Cutter to produce modern and period ladies’ costumes for 2025
Key Tasks and Responsibilities
- To communicate regularly with the Senior Cutter / Cutter and staff to ensure all deadlines are met, assisting and guiding the team as appropriate.
- To make, alter and refurbish costumes to a high standard
- In liaison with Senor Cutter /Cutter support staff development by sharing extensive knowledge and costume skills.
- To support working practice & techniques to ensure the effective meeting of production deadlines.
- To assist Senior Cutter / Cutter in organising and delegating work to the team.
- To accurately mark up alterations and distribute into the workroom as directed by the Senior Cutter/Cutter.
- To work with Senior Cutter / Cutter, helping to assess costume options for new casting.
- To produce accurate patterns and grade toiles as specified.
- To attend stage rehearsals as necessary, assisting the Senior Cutter / Cutter to provide costume related support.
- To measure and fit cast for revivals.
- To maintain safe working practices.
- To carry out other duties as required by the Head of Costume.
Knowledge, Skills and Experience
essential criteria
- Degree or equivalent experience in Costume / Tailoring/ Fashion
- Significant practical application in a workroom experience in historical costume/fashion construction and cutting
- Excellent ability in costume construction using industrial machinery and hand sewing techniques, with the acquired skills, to work to a very high standard in liaison with the Cutters
- Extensive knowledge, advanced skills and a high level of practical experience of making and cutting historical period and specialised garments to the highest standard
- Fully conversant with workroom procedures, involving a large team where you have guided and supported all members of the team
- Experience of motivating, supporting, guiding, instructing and supervising other team members in addition to supporting the Cutters
- Experience of drafting / draping costumes and cutting fabrics from patterns in liaison with the Cutters
- Experience of marking up garments after fittings and the distribution of alteration work as required in liaison with the Cutters
- Extensive knowledge of a wide range of fabrics and haberdashery
- Experience in undertaking fittings independently, as required, with a full knowledge of fitting room etiquette in liaison with the Cutters
- Advanced knowledge of workroom machinery and maintenance in both a domestic and industrial setting
- Excellent time management and organisational skills where you have managed your own workload and actively supported other members of the team of varying seniority whilst using your own initiative
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- An advanced knowledge of historical period and specialised costume
- Experience of being able to work well under pressure, adapting to any last minute changes
- Advanced level of computer literacy with the ability to produce and update required documents which may include access to the costume / company database
- Experience in undertaking fittings with minimum supervision
Desirable Criteria
- Knowledge and experience in jacket cutting and making
- A keen interest to further develop your knowledge of pattern drafting and draping skills
- A keen interest to develop your interpersonal and management skills to reflect the seniority of the role
- Ability to supervise , oversee and deliver specific costume projects , working independently with small ancillary teams as detailed by Cutter
Rate of Pay, Hours and Benefits
This is an hourly paid position and the current rates are £15.42 per hour/ £601.38 per week, plus any agreed increase for 2025.
The contractual hours of work are 39 hours per week, however this may increase during the Festival period. This will be discussed in further detail at the interview.
6.8 weeks holiday pay pro rata inclusive of bank holidays.
