Nationality: German

He works worldwide as a stage and costume designer for opera and drama, and in 1996, 2009 and 2018 he was voted Stage Designer of the Year in Opernwelt magazine critics’ poll. Until 2010, he also held a professorship at the Hochschule für Bildende Künste in Dresden. Engagements have taken him to Berlin, Bayerische, Vienna, DNOB, Paris, ROH, LA, Houston, Met, Madrid, La Monnaie, Copenhagen, Zürich, Helsinki, Moscow and Tokyo, as well as to the festivals in Salzburg, Bregenz and Baden-Baden. He enjoys an ongoing collaboration with the directors Peter Konwitschny, Rolando Villazón and Christof Loy, whose production of Tristan und Isolde (ROH) won the Olivier Award in 2010, and who also directed Peter Grimes (Theater an der Wien) which received the 2016 International Opera Award for New Production of the Year.
