Cal McCrystal

Position: Director
Nationality: Irish
Originally from Ireland, Cal McCrystal is known for his playful and dynamic creative vision on work spanning opera, theatre, circus, film, TV and radio. He trained at Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama and École Philippe Gaulier, and has worked extensively as an actor, writer and director. He was Comedy Director for National Theatre’s award-winning One Man, Two Guvnors and for Royal Shakespeare Company’s Don Quixote. He directed the original Mighty Boosh stage shows, winning a Perrier Award, and continues to work regularly for British repertory theatres and for the celebrated British clown troupe Spymonkey. He collaborated for many years with Kate Dimbleby on Beware of Young Girls, which transferred to New York in 2014. He was Comedy Director for Cirque du Soleil and created clown routines for Varekai and Zumanity: Another Side of Cirque du Soleil. For the last decade, he has written and directed the annual touring shows for Giffords Circus. He is a leading Comedy Consultant for the film industry. Taken from the Festival 2024 programme book.
