Arts Award at Home

This initiative offers young people the chance to engage in Glyndebourne’s work and the wider world of the arts and achieve a nationally recognised qualification completely remotely.

Glyndebourne announced it’s new scheme, Arts Award at Home, a few weeks into the nation-wide lockdown due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

This initiative offers young people the chance to engage in Glyndebourne’s work and the wider world of the arts and achieve a nationally recognised qualification completely remotely. Twelve young people started at the beginning of May, and this first cohort are now coming to the end of their projects, with beautiful online portfolios ready to be moderated by Trinity who accredit the awards.

Zara Limbrick, aged 9, is working towards an Arts Award Discover. Zara made her own props inspired by our production of L’elisir d’amore, saying “I decided to make the travelling salesman cabinet and have tried to make it look inviting for people to buy the elixir from. I used spare wood from my dad and he helped me measure my wood, saw and use the screwdriver drill to put the pieces together. I then used acrylic paints to decorate an old bottle and made a label on the computer. I wanted the bottle to look old and mysterious so I used a brown wash effect which is similar to tea staining. I also decorated some plant pots to give more colour and put out some cards as it gives a clue that he is really a trickster”

Pippa Slaytor, who is 25 and working towards an Arts Award Explore, has finished her portfolio and made a presentation of her work as part of this. Pippa said in her reflection “Firstly, when addressing the entire process of my Arts Award I feel like I have to mention the situation of completing this while still in lockdown. This has made things harder than I expected at first […] once I embraced this I found that creative thinking was also leading to being more creative in my activities and I think that we have had a unique experience of not only a virtual Arts Award but a virtual Arts Award completed solely (for me) in the same room. […] Overall I am proud of what I have produced and accomplished for my portfolio. Part A allowed me to attempt art through drawing, painting and embroidery which I thoroughly enjoyed. Part B gave me an insight into behind the scenes and the running of Glyndebourne as an Arts organisation, the Q&A providing a personal side to this research. I think the Glyndebourne website and the education resources are packed full of information and I will now be more aware of using this as a resource in the future.”

Arts Award at Home is open to all young people aged 5 – 25 years old and resident in the UK. Work is produced at your own pace, with support from an Arts Award Advisor, regular catch ups, and specially produced resources to allow you to engage with Glyndebourne’s productions.
