Introducing… Le nozze di Figaro

Find out more about this Glyndebourne new production, on stage in 2025.

A brand new production of Mozart’s Le nozze di Figaro comes to the Glyndebourne stage in 2025.

In this short video Mariame Clément tells us more about her vision for the production:

A brief introduction:

Le nozze di Figaro is perhaps opera’s greatest comedy. It was the first work to spring from the creative partnership between Mozart and librettist Lorenzo da Ponte, with whom he would go on to create Don Giovanni and Così fan tutte. Taking a play by French dramatist Pierre Beaumarchais as their inspiration, the pair softened the revolutionary politics of that piece, focusing on the relationships between the characters.

When Count Almaviva tries to seduce his valet Figaro’s pretty young fiancée, his servants and long-suffering wife conspire to teach him a lesson in fidelity he won’t forget.

This is a work that delicately unpicks the power structures and currents of emotions between masters and servants, while keeping a smile on the audience’s faces. Yes, this is a brilliant farce – but at its heart are deep and eloquent thoughts about love and relationships.

All this is set to Mozart’s colourful and varied music – some of the best he ever wrote.

Why not to miss it:

Le nozze di Figaro is the quintessential Glyndebourne opera, the first ever to be staged here in 1934, and the work that has been performed the most, and it’s easy to see why. Its mix of beautiful music, light-hearted fun and deeper themes make for the perfect summer evening at the opera.

Bringing this new production to Festival 2025 is the acclaimed French director Mariame Clément, loved by Glyndebourne audiences for her entertaining yet sophisticated comedies – including Don Pasquale and Il turco in Italia.

In this short video, Glyndebourne’s archivist Philip Boot explores the opera’s significance in our history, and shares treasures from our past productions.

A great moment to look out for:

The Overture to Le nozze di Figaro is Mozart at his scene-setting best. Fizzing with life and energy in the scurrying strings, it captures the teeming life of this busy household and its scheming inhabitants.

Cast and creative team:

The renowned Italian conductor and violinist Riccardo Minasi will conduct, he last appeared at Glyndebourne for the Festival 2022 production of Così fan tutte.

We’ll be welcoming back Louise Alder, fresh from her acclaimed 2024 run as Cleopatra in Giulio Cesare, as the Countess – she tells us more about the role in the video below. Rising star Huw Montague Rendall, who appeared at Glyndebourne in Don Pasquale (2022) and Così fan tutte (2021) will play Count Almaviva.
