Arts Award

During the first national lockdown, Glyndebourne Education were determined to offer young people a chance to engage with the arts whilst they could not be in the classroom, and so launched Arts Award at Home. This initiative offered young people the chance to engage with Glyndebourne’s work and the wider world of the arts whilst achieving a nationally recognised qualification, completely remotely.

15 participants, aged between 6 – 25, achieved their Arts Award with Glyndebourne at home and came from all across the UK. Using Glyndebourne operas as a springboard for their creativity, they created podcasts, learned new pieces of music and even made life-sized props. They engaged with Glyndebourne staff through online Q&As to learn more about the workings behind the scenes and watched the operas available through Glyndebourne at Home. Of those surveyed, all said that completing their Arts Award at Home with Glyndebourne challenged them during lockdown and made them want to learn more about opera. 

Pippa achieved an Arts Award Explore and said in her reflection: “[Completing the Arts Award in lockdown] made things harder than I expected at first […] once I embraced this I found that creative thinking was also leading to being more creative in my activities and I think that we have had a unique experience […] Overall I am proud of what I have produced and accomplished for my portfolio.”
