Arts Award is a national qualification that recognises young people aged 11-25 who develop as artists and arts leaders

Arts Award: Our Summer in Lockdown

During the first national lockdown, Glyndebourne Education were determined to offer young people a chance to engage with the arts whilst they could not be in the classroom, and so launched Arts Award at Home. This initiative offered young people the chance to engage with Glyndebourne’s work and the wider world of the arts whilst achieving a nationally recognised qualification, completely remotely.

15 participants, aged between 6 – 25, achieved their Arts Award with Glyndebourne at home and came from all across the UK. Using Glyndebourne operas as a springboard for their creativity, they created podcasts, learned new pieces of music and even made life-sized props. They engaged with Glyndebourne staff through online Q&As to learn more about the workings behind the scenes and watched the operas available through Glyndebourne at Home. Of those surveyed, all said that completing their Arts Award at Home with Glyndebourne challenged them during lockdown and made them want to learn more about opera.

Pippa achieved an Arts Award Explore and said in her reflection: “[Completing the Arts Award in lockdown] made things harder than I expected at first […] once I embraced this I found that creative thinking was also leading to being more creative in my activities and I think that we have had a unique experience […] Overall I am proud of what I have produced and accomplished for my portfolio.”

Hermione also achieved an Arts Award Explore and said: “I found it very interesting and it made you think a lot more about the hidden Glyndebourne. All the work and input that is needed, every detail and dream that comes to life on the stage.”

All the participants successfully completed their portfolios and have now received their certificates from Trinity College to recognise all their hard work.

“I could be creative and know that there was no right or wrong or good or bad, that whatever I made would be respected and valid” – Arts Award at Home Participant

Glyndebourne is an Arts Award supporter. We provide opportunities for participants to complete their portfolios by giving them the chance to gain experience in everything from auditioning to rehearsing, meeting and interviewing people working in the arts, and attending and reviewing performances.

Attendance at a Glyndebourne Performance for Schools can be included in a students’ portfolio. Click here for information on how to see a performance this autumn.

Arts Award is managed by Trinity College London in association with Arts Council England, working with ten regional Bridge organisations.
