Our study events are designed to offer historical context and musical insight to enhance your enjoyment of the 2014 repertoire opera. They feature lectures, demonstrations, musical excerpts and panel discussions with specialist scholars, Glyndebourne creative teams and performers.

Special guests at the La traviata study morning will include: Julie Kavanagh, author of The Girl Who Loved Camellias, and Francesco Izzo, University of Southampton and American Institute of Verdi Studies

Julie Kavanagh 

Julie is a writer and contributing editor for Intelligent Life, (The Economist's bi-monthly magazine). She is the author of Secret Muses: The Life of Frederick Ashton and Rudolf Nureyev: The Life. Her most recent biography The Girl Who Loved Camellias: The Life and Legend of Marie Duplessis was published by Knopf in 2013 and will be available in a Vintage paperback edition in August 2014.

Francesco Izzo

Francesco Izzo is Senior Lecturer (Associate Professor) at the University of Southampton. He has also taught at New York University (where he received his PhD in 2003) and East Carolina University. In 2009 he held a visiting professorship at the University of Chicago. He serves as Co-Director of the American Institute for Verdi Studies at NYU. He is the author of Laughter between Two Revolutions: Opera buffa in Italy, 1831-1848 (University of Rochester Press, 2013) and the editor of Un giorno di regno for the Works of Giuseppe Verdi (University of Chicago Press, forthcoming).
