Following the success of the première performance in 2009, Julian Philips's The Yellow Sofa, with a libretto by Edward Kemp – a tale of sex, a city and the seductive power of furniture – is being revived for 2011.
Composed during his tenure as Glyndebourne's first Composer in Residence, the performances will be directed by Frederick Wake-Walker and conducted by Gareth Hancock.

The study day on the Cunning Little Vixen was excellent. I am grateful to the organiser and participants for giving us such a super day, inspiring and full of information. I am looking forward to seeing the opera very much.

What a wonderful day! Both my husband and myself really enjoyed everything. Even though we had to start our journey by train at 7.30 am, and had to leave early, it was still the highlight of this year to date. I invest a lot in my passion for opera at Glyndebourne, and with the immense richness of each performance - impossible to absorb all in one evening - the delight is vastly augmented by these study days. My husband resolutely refuses to attend a performance, but he too loved the day. The lunch also was delicious. So - many many thanks to all concerned - and please - lots more occasions like this please! Cherry Frizzell
PS It would have been wonderful to have collected our Programme beforehand - alas, not available.

My wife and I attended the Cunning Little Vixen Study Event on Sunday, 13th May, and were most impressed by the content of the day. Each of the speakers treated us to a different view or aspect of the work, with relevant insight into the biography, musicianship and temperament of the composer - along with Geoff Dunbar's most entertaining account of the making of his animated film of the opera. Vladimir Jurowski, with contributions from some of the cast completed a remarkable day. Congratulations to all concerned in making it such a successful event - and to cap it all, how clever of you to get the sun to shine!

WONDERFUL to have Vladimir Jurowski to hear his input in such an interesting discussion but more importantly to 'see' his hands from the front - what a delicious touch!!

Another very informative and enjoyable day. Well compered -and
contribution of Vladimir Jurowski was of greatest interest.
The last session would have been greatly enhanced had we been given the words of the singers (+ translation) or better still the score.
Well organised, and warm welcome at the door much appreciated.
Also the free coffee - and the magnificent weather - altogether a wonderful day.

The Vixen study day was easily the best such event I have attended in the last five years. Fortunately the speakers did not always agree in their views which made it most stimulating. I have to say I did not always agree with what was said but that is inevitable. I saw most of Janacek's operas before one of the presenters was born. What mattered is I gained some new insights and the rapt attention of the patrons suggested I was not alone in this. I had been a bit worried maestro Jurowski would be in charge of the performances but his contribution left me eagerly awaiting my visit on Sunday next.
If I were not on holiday I should come to the Ravel day.

Brilliant study day - thank you so much. Fascinating history and context, and a real privilege to listen to the director and conductor talk about the work. I always look forward to the study days and they never disappoint. The talk by the enthusiastic creator of the lovely animated film was an unexpected treat.

Vixen Study Day. The morning lectures were excellent value. Sufficiently academic / serious without being too ponderous. They were very informative. I found the afternoon 'conversations' very forced and difficult to follow. I wondered if (in this case) the Director and Conductor ought to give a short presentation and that should form the basis for any conversation and audience questions. As ever, the snippets of music were a good taster to send us on our way.

The Cunning Little Vixen study day was simply inspirational. The programme was varied, speakers all excellent. It was fascinating to gain insight into the context, the setbacks and the triumphs of Janacek's operatic journey. And then to be taken inside the complex and delightful world of animation. The session with Vladimir Jurowski and the singers left us thrilled and moved. Can't wait to see the performance!

The Cunning Little Vixen

A superlative day with each component carefully examined and enthusiastically communicated by congenial and informed experts.
More please.

We thought it was a tremendous day. We found all the talks excellent and learnt a great deal about Janacek and 'The Cunning Little Vixen'. And have just bought tickets for it!
