Laurent Pelly’s Ravel double bill, which premiered at Glyndebourne Festival 2012, has been awarded the Best New Opera Production prize in the whatsonstage.com annual opera poll.
In its second year the whatsonstage.com Opera Poll saw fierce voting from over 1000 members of the general public and opera aficionados.
2012 was a remarkable year of extraordinary British achievements and I hope that Glyndebourne, in its own way, has played its part in celebrating the richness of our culture. I like to think that our production of Purcell’s The Fairy Queen would have fitted perfectly into the opening ceremony of the Olympics with its peculiarly British humour sitting alongside ravishing music by one of our country’s greatest composers.
Almost one year on from the launch of the Glyndebourne wind turbine, over 150 young people from across Sussex will perform at the opera house in a gala concert dedicated to exploring nature, nurture and the environment. ‘Till the summer comes again’ takes place on the main stage at Glyndebourne on Sunday 9 December.
Twenty-eight year old Baritone Duncan Rock has been granted the first £10,000 Chilcott Award for young British opera singers. Duncan made his Glyndebourne debut in 2010 when he performed as the Novice’s Friend in Billy Budd (pictured) and he then went on to perform at Glyndebourne as Keeper of the Madhouse in The Rake’s Progress and as Mercurio in L’incoronazione di Poppea.
The latest release from the Glyndebourne label is a recording of Bizet’s universally popular opera Carmen, starring Anne Sofie von Otter. It is the first and only audio recording of the internationally-acclaimed mezzo soprano performing the role.

It is with deep regret that Glyndebourne informs you that Robert Poulton was tragically killed in a car accident on Tuesday 30 October 2012.
Robert had been a very valued part of the Glyndebourne family for many years. He started his professional career in the Glyndebourne Chorus and as part of this distinguished career had performed central roles both in the Festival and Tour. He will be enormously missed by everyone in the company.
