Two Glyndebourne recordings are among six opera recordings shortlisted in the 2014 Gramophone Awards.

Glyndebourne Tour is to honour the artistic vision of its founder Sir George Christie by taking three world-class productions, two fresh from premieres at Glyndebourne Festival, on the road this autumn. Sir George, who died in May, established the Tour in 1968 driven by an ambition to bring the highest quality opera to as many people as possible and nurture talented singers from across the world at the start of their careers.

Glyndebourne has retained the 3* Industry Green rating it was awarded last  year by independent environmental organisation Julie’s Bicycle in recognition of the organisation’s on-going commitment to addressing its environmental impact.  This rating is currently held by just three other arts venues and five outdoor festivals.

It is with great sadness that we report the death of our dear friend and supporter Christine Collins. Throughout her life, Christine has been a champion and major benefactor of the arts. At Glyndebourne she was committed to supporting young people and their artistic journey. Christine supported the chorus scheme, as well as the successful pilot of the Glyndebourne Academy which assists young people who have barriers to receiving musical training. In 2014 she had given her support to the Understudies for La Finta Giardiniera.

Glyndebourne’s 2013 community opera, Imago, has won a prestigious Royal Philharmonic Society (RPS) Music Award, it was announced last night (13 May). Imago won the Learning and Participation award which is presented to a project which inspired participation in music-making and created high quality musical experience and understanding.

The only son of Glyndebourne founders John Christie and Audrey Mildmay, Sir George Christie succeeded his father to become Chairman of Glyndebourne in 1958 when he was just 23. He held the position until 1999, during which time he and his wife Mary transformed his family business into the world-renowned opera house it is today. During his tenure as Chairman, Sir George served on many artistic boards, including the Gulbenkian Foundation, Arts Council England, London Philharmonic Orchestra and the London Sinfonietta.

Newly released figures show that the Glyndebourne wind turbine has exceeded its target in its second year of operation. In the 12 months to January 2014, the turbine generated enough energy to cover 102% of the organisation’s electricity needs, surpassing the projected target of 90%. Any power that isn’t used by Glyndebourne is exported to the local grid to provide a source of renewable energy for the community.

Glyndebourne has launched a national art competition inviting talented and aspiring young artists to design the cover of its 2014 Tour Programme. The winning artist will see their artwork grace the cover of 10,000 copies of the Glyndebourne Tour Programme and be commercially exhibited at Glyndebourne and participating galleries this autumn.

With three new productions, a new head chef and an eagerly anticipated new Music Director, 2014 will see Glyndebourne Festival celebrate 80 years as one of Europe’s most beloved cultural attractions. Joining Glyndebourne as Executive Chef is Julian Wilson, former head chef at Harrods, who began his career at Glyndebourne in the 1980s. Julian forms a key part of the award-winning team at Leiths, offering modern British dining from quintessential Glyndebourne picnics to luxurious cream teas and high end, haute cuisine.
