Glyndebourne is celebrating a record six nominations in this year’s What’s On Stage Opera Poll. The shortlist announced today [18 December 2013] sees Glyndebourne nominated in four out of the five categories with multiple nominations in three.

Glyndebourne’s critically acclaimed production of Billy Budd is to set sail for New York in February for its US première. This is the first time Glyndebourne will stage Britten’s seafaring epic outside the UK. The production will appear at the Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM) between February 7 and 13 and tickets are selling well.

On Friday 22 November eighty young people aged 9 - 17 will perform on the main-stage at Glyndebourne to mark the centenary of Benjamin Britten, exactly one hundred years since the day of his birth. The performance will be attended by Britten’s niece, Sussex resident, Sally Schweizer. She will meet the participants and give a post-performance talk to share memories of her uncle, one of Britain’s most celebrated composers.

The Glyndebourne label has released a live recording of Love and Other Demons, the fifth opera by composer Peter Eötvös and a co-commission by Glyndebourne and the BBC. The opera is based on the novel Of Love and Other Demons by Columbian author Gabriel García Márquez Peter Eötvös is among the most commissioned creators of new operas in Europe. His latest new work, Paradise Reloaded, has its world premiere at Neue Oper Wien in Austria in October 2013.

In one month’s time, Glyndebourne’s 45th annual Tour will launch. A culmination of around 550 hours rehearsal - with a cast including 23 soloists, 37 choristers, 119 musicians and 20 children - the Tour consists of three operas crafted to the highest production standards and showcases some of the most exciting new operatic talent around.

Glyndebourne is competing to be crowned the first ever winner of the Most Welcoming Theatre Award in association with Classic FM. The award is part of the My Theatre Matters! campaign, which is run by Equity, Theatrical Management Association and The Stage, and seeks to galvanise public support for regional theatres following cuts in local government funding during 2013.

Robin Ticciati will conduct his first Glyndebourne Festival as Music Director.  He is only the seventh conductor to hold the post in Glyndebourne’s 80- year history, following in the distinguished line of Fritz Busch, Vittorio Gui, John Pritchard, Bernard Haitink, Andrew Davis and Vladimir Jurowski.
