A Seasonal message from David Pickard, General Director
Reflecting on 2011, yet again I am struck by the extraordinary support that Glyndebourne receives from its Members and supporters. We have had an amazing year on many levels, including record Box Office sales for the Festival (closing at 99.4% sales) and unprecedented backing from our funders. The capacity houses at the Festival were complemented by new audiences watching our productions at cinemas throughout the country, the IMAX cinema at the Science Museum, and an innovative partnership with the Guardian newspaper where people worldwide watched Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg and The Turn of the Screw live via the Guardian website.
My highlight of 2011 was seeing Glyndebourne realise John Christie’s dream of staging Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg, some 83 years after he had performed the role of Sixtus Beckmesser in a concert performance of Act 3, Scene 1 in the Organ Room. To see and hear this magnificent work in such an intimate theatre as Glyndebourne's was one of the most thrilling and moving experiences I can remember.
There is much to look forward to in 2012 and we are already busy creating sets, props and costumes for what promises to be three exciting new productions for next year's Festival. I very much hope to be able to welcome you here to enjoy them with us but in the meantime I would like to take this opportunity to wish all of you a very happy and peaceful Christmas.
