Rosa Glyndebourne inspires gardens this autumn

Glyndebourne opera house and Harkness Roses have launched Rosa ‘Glyndebourne’, a bespoke english rose designed and developed as a signature plant and inspired by the music and spirit of Glyndebourne.

Rosa ‘Glyndebourne’ is a contemporary shrub rose with sumptuous, full-petalled flowers and a soft, delicate fragrance. Inspired by the music and the landscape at Glyndebourne, the Christie family and the Glyndebourne gardens team have worked in partnership with Harkness Roses to create this beautiful plant.

Designed as a captivating, modern shrub rose, Rosa ‘Glyndebourne’ adds a dash of perfumed charm to gardens and floral bouquets. The centre of the flower is a light peach colour fading to almond blossom on the outer petals, it brings natural colour to a room or a flowering hedge and its flowers resemble the traditional english rose variety. Producing masses of flowers from May to September (Harkness roses have recorded an average of 75 petals in each stem) this is a rose that the breeders believe will have wide appeal and go on to become one of Britain’s premier roses.

Rose breeder Philip Harkness said: “At Harkness we have been expert rose growers and breeders since 1879 and our expertise lies in creating roses that are reliable, with strong flowering performance and intrinsic beauty. Fortunately this was our brief from Glyndebourne and we were delighted to be invited to work in partnership to develop a rose that celebrates art and nature and reflects the spirit of its musical home and surrounding landscape. We studied the roses in our trial fields to find the perfect plant, aiming for a rose that offers a delicious and subtle scent and would be at home in a city or a country garden and after eight years in development, we found what we believe will become a sought after and iconic rose breed.”

Glyndebourne’s captivating landscape proves an enchanting workplace for conductors, performers and directors who are inspired by the gardens and the surrounding Sussex downs. Rosa ‘Glyndebourne’ will add to the impact of the grounds and become a rose that both gardeners and music lovers will plant for inspiration in their own gardens.

In 1953 Vita Sackville-West, one of the 20th century’s greatest garden makers, described Glyndebourne in glowing terms noting “the graciousness of civilisation here surely touches a peak where the arts of music, architecture and gardening combine." In the 21st century Glyndebourne continues to be at the pinnacle of musical and gardening excellence and now it has the perfect flower to embody the spirit of Glyndebourne.

Rosa ‘Glyndebourne’ retails at £13.50 and proceeds from sales of this elegant shrub will contribute to ensuring that Glyndebourne remains financially independent and is able to continue to stage its world renowned operas.
