Robert Poulton

Posted on 31st October 2012

It is with deep regret that Glyndebourne informs you that Robert Poulton was tragically killed in a car accident on Tuesday 30 October 2012.

Robert had been a very valued part of the Glyndebourne family for many years. He started his professional career in the Glyndebourne Chorus and as part of this distinguished career had performed central roles both in the Festival and Tour. He will be enormously missed by everyone in the company.

David Pickard, General Director said: ‘The news of Robert’s death is devastating for his family – and for all of us at Glyndebourne who have so valued him over many years.  It is testament to Robert’s generous character and amazing musicianship that he had such a distinguished operatic career, not just at Glyndebourne but also at many of the leading international houses. Our thoughts at this time are with Robert’s family, to whom we extend our deepest sympathy.”

Robert was singing the role of Gamekeeper in Rusalka as part of Glyndebourne’s 2012 Tour. As a mark of respect to Robert, his family and colleagues, the performance on 31 October at Norwich Theatre Royal was cancelled.

I, like you all are, am devastated at the death of the wonderful rob poulton, such a tragic and sudden loss.He was making me laugh only last march at the rah. my heart goes out to his family.

Please send my heatfelt thoughts to Jean and Graham for their tragic loss. I remember Robert as a young boy, as we lived next door to each other when we were children growing up. Although we were not that close, I feel part of me has gone too. God Bless Robert. He was a lovely boy. A dear little blonde boy.X

Very shocked to read this news, especially only having seen 'Rusalka' a couple of weeks ago.

I'd admired many of his performances over the years, and his Golaud in the Glyndebourne production remains one of my most memorable operatic memories.

My thoughts are with his family.

I was so sorry to hear of the tragic death of Robert.
My thoughts and prayers are with his family and many friends and colleagues at Glyndebourne.

Tragic news. RIP.

I had the enormous honour to call Bob a friend when I worked at Glyndebourne during the eighties and nineties, he was a great friend and good man. He wil be sadly missed.

Shocked and devastated to hear of this tragic accident. Rob had a wonderful gift and devotion to his craft but also a warm and generous personality and was a wonderful and much loved friend. Our Thoughts and prayers are with Philippa, Tom and William. Mike and Nicola Bloom.

So sorry to hear this desperately sad news. Rob was a man with a wonderful, balanced outlook on life, and great charisma. He was a superb musician, whom we loved seeing in Rusalka just a few weeks ago. He was a man devoted to his lovely family. Our thoughts are with them at this tragic time.

I am very sad to have heard the news about Robert's accident. I got to know him when we were both working on Ariadne for WNO. He was such a gentle, lovely man and very generous. We can all not begin to imagine what the sudden loss of Robert means to his relatives and close friends, when even those who knew him only a little respected and liked him so much and are so deeply moved by losing him. I send the most sincere condolences to all who mourn him.

So sorry to hear of this tragic loss. My husband and I were lucky enough to see Robert in the role of the Gamekeeper in Rusalka twice in the last fortnight and thoroughly enjoyed his performances. Sincere condolences to all - family and the Glyndebourne company.

Such very sad news. I will always remember Rob with a smile from our WNO days. My thoughts and deepest sympathy go to his family and all who loved him. God Bless

I had never seen Rusalka until last Friday when I attended Glyndebourne's production at Woking. It was, for me, a new and wonderful experience. Robert Poulton was part of that experience and for that I shall be foreveer grateful. Not much confort for his family, but I hope they know that he made a difference.

Sad to hear the news about Robert. Thinking of everyone in the Glyndebourne family at this time

A tragic loss of one of our great baritones. I saw him sing in Rusalka at Glyndebourne only a fortnight ago. His performance was electric and at the same time deeply powerful and intelligent. He will be sadly missed by all those involved with and interested in opera in Britain.

one of the nicest people I ever worked with.

Rob was a wonderful friend and colleague with whom I had the privilege of working with on numerous occasions; he had a wonderful sense of humour, and his presence always guaranteed a great working atmosphere. He will be missed by so many .........

I'm so sorry to hear this. It's been a long time since I worked with Rob but I don't forget his warm humour and great singing. I will miss him, and of course extend my sympathy to family and colleagues.

This is such shocking news! What a tragedy, not only for his family, but also for the world of opera! He will be sadly missed. His performance as the Gamekeeper in 'Rusulka' is one that I will always treasure...such a beautiful baritone voice and I heard that he was a very kind man as well! RIP Robert...

Such sad news. Our thoughts are with Robert's family and with you all in the wider Glyndebourne community.

Shocked and sad to hear this terrible news. Condolences to his family and colleagues who will all be deeply affected by this.

I saw him at Woking on Friday night and he was superb full of life and full of singing. I had worked with him once or twice especially at the Guildhall and he was a really generous colleague.I am deeply saddened by the news I send his family my condolences and prayers. He will be missed.
My husband who works at Woking and is in charge spoke to him last week and is deeply saddened by the news our thoughts are with his family

one of the nicest people I'd ever worked with.

I am so very sad to hear this. I worked with Rob a long time ago at Glyndebourne. He was kind, clever, quick, wonderful to work with. He had a ready smile and a wicked wit, he was a seriously good actor and moved beautifully onstage. He was one of the best Figaros I've ever seen.
My deepest sympathies to his family, his friends and the company.

Rob was one of the nicest men I have ever met. I am shocked by the news of his untimely death. My thoughts are with his family.

Rob. You were a great great guy and fantastic singer. Terrible news. Totally stunned.

This is tragic news. I sang with Robert at Grange Park in 2004 and was privileged to witness his sparkling performance in Cenerentola from the wings. He was a lovely man and a fine actor and singer; the world is a darker place without him. RIP.

i didnt know him but may he rest in peace

What terrible news. Condolences and deepest sympathy to Robert's family. A terribly sad end to a distinguished career. Thankyou Robert for all your dedication.
