News Release Ana Maria Martinez fall

Ana María Martínez

Statement from Glyndebourne – Rusalka on Friday 21st August 2009

The performance of Rusalka on Friday 21st August was stopped just before the end of Act I following an accident on stage involving Ana María Martínez who sings Rusalka. Miss Martinez fell into the orchestra pit. Despite Ana María wanting to continue with the performance, she was immediately taken to hospital as a precautionary measure. Her understudy, Natasha Jouhl, who plays the role of the First Nymph in the opera, continued in the principal role while her understudy, Natalya Romaniw, took the role of First Nymph in Act III. Fortunately, no one else was hurt in this incident.

Ana María Martínez performed the role of Rusalka on Monday 24th August.

Ana Maria's personal note regarding her fall at Glyndebourne:

"I wish to thank everyone for their good wishes and tremendous support during this time. I particularly wish to thank Glyndebourne Festival Opera for their great and nurturing care and also my family, friends and colleagues.

"The fall was traumatic yet, aside from some soreness, bumps and scratches, I am feeling relatively well. There is no doubt in my mind and heart that I was miraculously spared and am filled with tremendous joy and gratitude for this blessing. My fall was cradled by the dear Santiago Sabino Carvalho, cellist of the London Philharmonic, whom I now refer to as "Saint Santiago!" Thankfully, he is fine ... his cello, sadly, did not fare as well as he did.

"I felt overjoyed to resume my performance as Rusalka last night; I enjoyed every moment of being back on the horse!

"Thank you all for your positive thoughts!"
