Glyndebourne Operas to be screened at ODEON cinemas

Glyndebourne announces new partnership with ODEON cinemas - 21st June 2007

Glyndebourne Festival Opera and ODEON cinemas are proud to present three critically acclaimed productions, Giulio Cesare, Tristan und Isolde and Così fan tutte on the big screen this autumn. The unabridged operas are shown in high definition with Dolby Digital sound.

In an exciting new initiative to extend our work beyond the opera house, Glyndebourne has joined up with ODEON to be the first UK opera house to present world-class opera at cinemas throughout the country. On dates in September, October and November audiences from across the UK will have the opportunity to experience Glyndebourne Opera in ODEON Cinemas in ten cities – including London, Cardiff and Manchester at ticket prices starting from just £7.50 per person.

Reaching out to new audiences and giving them fresh contact with the operatic art form is a priority for Glyndebourne.  Six years ago, Glyndebourne was the first opera house in the UK to self-produce its own audio-visual material (in partnership with Opus Arte and the BBC).  This ground-breaking decision, coupled with the new agreement with ODEON, now enables Glyndebourne to be the first UK opera house to present world-class opera at cinemas throughout the country.

Così fan tutte, Thursday 27th September, 6pm

To celebrate the 250th anniversary of Mozart's birth in 2006, Glyndebourne staged this production of Così fan tutte. This late masterpiece reveals some of Mozart's most exquisite writing, and in Così fan tutte disguise is used to explore the difference between reality and appearance. Così fan tutte was directed by Nicholas Hytner, with Hungarian conductor, Iván Fischer and a cast that includes some of the world's most talented young Mozartian singers.

Tristan und Isolde, Thursday 25th October, 6pm

Glyndebourne’s first ever Wagner production, directed by Nikolaus Lehnhoff, conducted by Jiří Bĕlohlávek, proved to be a major landmark in the company’s history. This production was recorded in 2007. Wagner’s interpretation of the medieval fable of the Cornish knight, Tristan, and Irish princess, Isolde, is acknowledged as having transformed the course of musical history. In Lehnhoff's ground-breaking production the venue for the action is the soul, and we travel with the lovers on their long day’s journey into night and total union.

Giulio Cesare on Thursday 29th November, 6pm

Giulio Cesare is one of Handel’s grandest and most lavishly scored works and this critically acclaimed Glyndebourne production directed by David McVicar and conducted by William Christie, won the 2006 South Bank Show Award for Best Opera. Giulio Cesare is a study of political manoeuvring as the imperialistic nobility of Caesar’s Romans meets the passionate and cunning world of Cleopatra’s Egypt.  Handel creates a succession of exquisite arias in an operatic epic depicting political drama, revenge and all-consuming love.

David Pickard, General Director of Glyndebourne said:
This is everything we hoped for when we took the decision to begin self-producing our own audio-visual material in 2002.  While it is well-known that our box-office is regularly at 95% capacity, we have continually looked for ways in which to share the quality of our artistic standards with a broader audience.  The combination of these standards coupled with the reach, distribution and expertise of ODEON Cinemas is the perfect solution and we are thrilled that Glyndebourne operas will now be available in local cinemas.”

Gerald Buckle, Digital Development Manager at ODEON Cinemas said:
This partnership means we can share world class opera with more people and as we’ll be screening the shows in high definition with Dolby Digital sound, opera fans will be able to experience the same quality from a live show, from the convenience of their local cinema.”
