Glyndebourne launches competition to champion young visual artists

Glyndebourne has launched a national art competition inviting talented and aspiring young artists to design the cover of its 2014 Tour Programme. The winning artist will see their artwork grace the cover of 10,000 copies of the Glyndebourne Tour Programme and be commercially exhibited at Glyndebourne and participating galleries this autumn.

Glyndebourne is inviting artists aged between 16 and 30 to submit artwork inspired by La traviata, one of three operas that will tour the country from October to December.

The Glyndebourne Tour Programme is the sister publication of the Glyndebourne Festival Programme, a collector’s item that is well-known for its contemporary front covers. Recent cover artists include Grayson Perry, David Hockney and Anish Kapoor.

Gus Christie, Executive Chairman of Glyndebourne, said: “Visual arts has always been an integral part of Glyndebourne on and off the stage and this competition continues our aspirations to engage with young visual artists."

Since the advent of the Tour in 1968, Glyndebourne has sought to broaden the reach of opera, bringing the art form to new audiences every autumn as it takes three productions on the road. Now in its second year, the Glyndebourne Tour Programme cover competition acts as an opportunity to champion young and emerging artistic talent of a different kind. The competition presents a genuine opportunity for young artists to raise their profile. Artists will also be offered the option to sell their work through the exhibition at a commercial rate.

Artists are invited to submit paintings, drawings, original prints, mixed media, photography and digital pieces for the competition. Pieces must work on two levels – as the Glyndebourne Tour Programme cover and as an exhibition piece hung for display.

Closing date for all entries is 18 July 2014. The winning artist will be announced in July following the decision of a specially convened panel of judges.
