Glyndebourne label release first audio recording of Anne Sofie von Otter as Carmen
The latest release from the Glyndebourne label is a recording of Bizet’s universally popular opera Carmen, starring Anne Sofie von Otter. It is the first and only audio recording of the internationally-acclaimed mezzo soprano performing the role.
Glyndebourne prides itself on promoting young artists and providing established singers with the opportunity to try new material, and achieved both with this 2002 production which saw Anne Sofie von Otter fulfill her ambition to play the role of Carmen, and gave young Swiss conductor Phillippe Jordan his UK debut.
David McVicar’s 2002 Glyndebourne Festival production is only the second production of Carmen in Glyndebourne’s 78-year history and it was highly praised for its exceptional musical standards.
“Musically it’s superb with the most responsive chorus you’re likely to hear live, and a driven, detailed reading from conductor, Philippe Jordan.”
Andrew Clements, The Guardian
“Violent, passionate, superbly played…Glyndebourne’s Carmen is simply gripping.”
Hugh Canning, The Sunday Times
“The chorus who have been on magnificent form all summer, surpassed themselves, alternating robustly full tone with, when required, a barely audible whisper.”
Rodney Milnes, The Times
“This is the daring triumph of a singer going right against her usual statuesque demenor and beyond the aloofness communicated by her superb vocal composure. In breaking her own mold, she also reveals a Carmen who is complete yet of a different kind.”
Paul Griffiths, New York Times
Great opera performances are fleeting moments in time and since 1960, every note of every Glyndebourne Festival performance has been recorded making it possible to deliver realistic recordings which recreate the live experience.
The Glyndebourne Label launched in 2008 and makes use of modern technology to delve in to this incredible archive and allow some of the most seminal opera performances of the last fifty years to be enjoyed again. Carmen is just the latest in a series of classic Glyndebourne releases.
The CD will be available to buy from the Glyndebourne shop as well as other good music retailers from November 2012.
