The Glyndebourne Label – new release spring 2010

Rusalka cover

Glyndebourne is proud to announce that the next recording to be released on its independent CD label will be Rusalka from the 2009 Festival conducted by Jiří Bělohlávek with Ana María Martínez in the title role.

The Glyndebourne Label reflects the desire to further extend Glyndebourne’s work beyond the opera house and draws upon the core values of a commitment to quality and inventiveness. Releases on The Glyndebourne Label draw on the extensive recordings in our archive, which span the years from 1960 to the present day. These recordings are often released in pairs, with one recording from the old opera house and one from the new, which opened in 1994.

The recordings were originally made for archival purposes and effectively ‘eavesdrop’ on live performances, the recorded sound derived from microphones of extremely high quality, located for the most part high above the orchestra pit. This practice has resulted in vividly realistic recordings with the sound corresponding very closely to that which the audience heard in the live environment. Recorded by the late John Barnes, with the blessing of the Christie family, this unique collection of performance recordings is now becoming available on CD for the first time.

The CDs are packaged as a hard-bound book containing a full libretto and synopsis in two languages along with a commissioned article about the opera.

Rusalka Dvořák

Dvořák’s Rusalka is submersed in poetry, romance and lyricism which flow through the entire opera, from Rusalka’s radiant song to the moon aria in Act 1, to the heart-wrenching closing duet in which the doomed lovers sink beneath the moonlit waters of the lake.

A recording of the rapturously received new production from the 2009 Festival, Rusalka was the first opera by Dvořák to be staged at Glyndebourne. It marked the opera debut of director Melly Still, who, among many other productions, directed the acclaimed Coram Boy at the National Theatre. This production was also conductor Jiří Bělohlávek’s third opera at Glyndebourne, following the successes of Jenůfa (2000) and Tristan und Isolde (2003).

This recording captures vibrant lyric soprano Ana María Martínez making her Glyndebourne debut singing the title role for the first time, alongside charismatic Brandon Jovanovich as the Prince, following his performances as Don José in the 2008 Festival.

Mischa Schelomianski, who made his house debut as Prince Gremin in the 2008 Festival revival of Eugene Onegin, sings Vodnik. Larissa Diadkova as Ježibaba and Tatiana Pavlovskaya as the Foreign Princess make their Glyndebourne debuts. With Glyndebourne’s Resident Orchestra, the London Philharmonic Orchestra.

"What a special performance this is…Martínez sings from such a deep core of longing…that you totally buy into the belief that she can sing just about anything." - The Independent

"With a cast who sing with unbridled passion, the tragic depth of Dvořák’s music is fully plumbed." - The Times

"Rusalka was conducted delicately yet decisively, with power and with poetry, by Jirí Bĕlohlávek." - Times Literary Supplement

About Glyndebourne:

The internationally renowned Glyndebourne Festival was founded in 1934 by John Christie and his wife, Audrey Mildmay; their grandson Gus is now Executive Chairman with David Pickard the General Director. Carl Ebert was the first Artistic Director and Fritz Busch Music Director. Vladimir Jurowski is the current Music Director. The Festival repertoire has expanded to include operas from the baroque to the contemporary, including seven of Glyndebourne’s own commissions and 13 British premieres. The opera house itself was rebuilt in 1994 and now seats 1,200. Glyndebourne on Tour was founded in 1968 taking productions to a wider audience and offering increased performance opportunities to young singers. Additionally, Glyndebourne’s Education department has an enormous commitment to new opera and community projects; it currently hosts over 230 different activities each year. With 124 opera performances annually reaching over 140,000 people, Glyndebourne’s continued employment of inspirational directors and performers, and the ongoing drive to commission new work, now goes hand-in-hand with digital innovations to reach new audiences.
