Glyndebourne celebrates six What’s On Stage Opera Poll nominations

Glyndebourne is celebrating a record six nominations in this year’s What’s On Stage Opera Poll. The shortlist announced today [18 December 2013] sees Glyndebourne nominated in four out of the five categories with multiple nominations in three.

Glyndebourne’s General Director David Pickard said: “I am delighted that Glyndebourne has received a total of six nominations in the What's On Stage opera awards, reflecting both the range and quality of our work in 2013. I hope our ever expanding audience –online and in cinemas, as well as in the theatre – will wish to support these nominations with their votes.”

Nominated for best new opera production is Jonathan Kent’s Hippolyte et Aricie, which premiered at this year’s Glyndebourne Festival and Fiona Shaw’s The Rape of Lucretia for Glyndebourne Tour.

Sarah Connolly is also recognised for her performance in Hippolyte et Aricie, with a nomination in the Outstanding Achievement in a Main Role category for her portrayal of Phèdre. Also nominated in this category is Laurent Naouri for his title performance in Glyndebourne’s revival of Falstaff

Falstaff is recognised again in the Best Revival category alongside Glyndebourne’s revival of Michael Grandage’s Billy Budd.

The 2013 awards include a new category, Best Newcomer to the UK Operatic Scene. Here, 20-year-old Ilyich Rivas is nominated for conducting the 2013 Glyndebourne Tour production of Hänsel und Gretel.

The nominations have been chosen by the What’s On Stage opera editorial team. The winner of each category will be decided by public vote, which closes on January 31. Last year, more than 10,000 votes were cast.
