Glyndebourne celebrates European Opera Days with a free film streaming

Glyndebourne will celebrate the 2012 European Opera Days campaign by hosting a free online streaming of On Such A Night, a charming and captivating film from Glyndebourne’s rich archive featuring John Christie, David Knight, Marie Lohr and Josephine Griffin.

Directed by Anthony Asquith, this quintessentially English film tells the tale of an American tourist who, on arriving at Victoria station in London with the intention of visiting the picturesque South Downs, inadvertently follows a group of well-dressed opera goers to Glyndebourne. There he watches his first opera - Le nozze di Figaro - of which a number of original and rare excerpts of live performances are included.

Originally released in 1956, the film has been digitally restored from the material preserved by the British Film Institute National Archive and re-released on DVD .

Now in its sixth year European Opera Days will again encourage opera companies to open their doors on 12 and 13 May 2012, inviting people across Europe to discover the art of opera.  Celebrated far and wide through a variety of events and activities, people will be given the chance to discover the art of opera in all of its forms and gain an insight into opera 'behind the scenes'. From Lisbon to Moscow, Belgrade to Gothenburg, the European Opera Days offer an exciting gateway into the world of opera.

David Pickard, General Director at Glyndebourne said: “The purpose of European Opera Days is to introduce opera to new audiences which is an ambition Glyndebourne shares.

One way in which Glyndebourne has been able to reach new audiences is through our digital work and I am delighted that we have this opportunity to share ‘On Such A Night’ with international audiences.    We are proud to be one of more than 80 opera companies across Europe taking part in European Opera Days.”

For the first time, local events will be united through Facebook on a dedicated European Opera Days page. Pictures will be posted throughout the weekend to give visitors an overview of the event and help them discover what other companies are doing.

On Such A Night will be available to stream on the Glyndebourne website for seven days from Thursday 10th May. Visit www.glyndebourne.com/european-opera-days.

Somehow, way back in 1956 I suppose, I came across a delightful film about an unsuspecting American visitor who finds himself at Glyndebourne. I often have described the film to friends, but never found anyone else who knew it. Imagine my intense pleasure when suddenly it reappeared. It is still charming, evocative and brings with it memories of much pleasure and so many other "Such Nights"

Incidentally, I have on my shelves my copy of the programme book which our American visitor is holding.

Many thanks for sending me "On Such a Night", by e-mail.

You might like to know that the first and only previous time I saw this film was 45 years ago, when I was working on an overseas development project in central Africa. We were a small group from England, and we had to provide our own amusement. One of us had a film projector, and by chance had this film, which he showed as an after-dinner entertainment.

So there we were, all in our early twenties, thousands of miles from home and hundreds of miles from anywhere, watching a film about Glyndebourne.

I made a resolution that when I got back to England, I would find a way of getting to Glyndebourne. It took a while, but I have been a regular visitor to Glyndebourne for many years now. And of course I will be seeing The Marriage of Figaro this summer!
