Glyndebourne to celebrate European Opera Days with online streaming of Knight Crew
Glyndebourne is giving audiences another chance to see the acclaimed community production of Knight Crew, to celebrate European Opera Days.
From Saturday 7 May until the end of the month, the full opera will be streamed online in partnership with Plushmusic. Find links to the streaming on the Glyndebourne website www.glyndebourne.com from 7 May.
Glyndebourne’s digital celebration of European Opera Days 2011 rings true to the theme of this year’s event, which focuses on opera for young audiences.
Knight Crew was premiered at Glyndebourne in March 2010 and featured a chorus of more than 200 young people, some of whom had no previous musical experience.
They were led by TV presenter and Chorus Master Gareth Malone, who was tasked with developing their performance to a level suitable for the Glyndebourne stage - famed for its extremely high standards of artistic excellence.
The project, which was almost a year in the making, was filmed for a fly-on-the-wall documentary, Gareth Goes to Glyndebourne. It was first broadcast in June 2010 on BBC 2 and reached audiences of 2 million.
European Opera Days is now in its fifth year. It invites opera houses across the world to hold a weekend of events for people new to the art form, or wanting to broaden their existing knowledge. In 2011, more than 100 opera houses, from Sweden to Syria, will take part.
Notes for editors:
The internationally renowned Glyndebourne Festival was founded in 1934 by John Christie and his wife, Audrey Mildmay; their grandson Gus is now Executive Chairman with David Pickard the General Director. Carl Ebert was the first Artistic Director and Fritz Busch Music Director. Vladimir Jurowski is the current Music Director. Now is its 75th year the Festival repertoire has expanded to include operas from the baroque to the contemporary, including seven of Glyndebourne’s own commissions and 13 British premieres. The opera house itself was rebuilt in 1994 and now seats 1,200.
Glyndebourne on Tour was founded in 1968 taking productions to a wider audience and offering increased performance opportunities to young singers. Additionally, Glyndebourne’s Education department has an enormous commitment to new opera and community projects; it currently hosts over 230 different activities each year. With 124 opera performances annually reaching over 140,000 people, Glyndebourne’s continued employment of inspirational directors and performers, and the ongoing drive to commission new work, now goes hand in hand with digital innovations to reach new audiences.

Now in its fifth year, European Opera Days makes a strong statement that opera is relevant to today’s society and is accessible to everyone.
