Glyndebourne achieves the highest industry rating for its commitment to environmental excellence

Glyndebourne has been awarded the Industry Green Mark (3 stars – the highest possible rating) by independent environmental organisation Julie’s Bicycle. Glyndebourne is one of only six organisations in the UK (from across the creative industries) to have been awarded this standard for its on-going commitment to the environment and for ensuring that environmental performance and sustainable use of energy, waste, water and travel are at the heart of its operations.

Glyndebourne is the only opera house in the UK to derive its electricity requirements from an on-site wind turbine and in the 12 months to 31 January 2013, Glyndebourne’s wind turbine generated 89% of the organisation’s electricity needs. Glyndebourne is committed to a long-term, energy-saving programme driven by an organisational desire to minimise carbon emissions.

Gus Christie, Executive Chairman of Glyndebourne Productions, said: “We are deeply concerned about climate change and have been committed to reducing our impact on the environment for several years. We are proud that our actions have been independently accredited, confirming that we are working to the highest possible standards across our operations. We have invested in many energy efficiency measures and are committed to working with staff, audiences and stakeholders to reduce our impact on the environment."

Industry Green is an independent certification of environmental sustainability and was set up in partnership with the Environmental Change Institute at Oxford University. Industry Green is administered by Julie’s Bicycle who work to make environmental sustainability intrinsic to the business, art and ethics of creative industries.

Julie’s Bicycle Founder and Chief Executive, Alison Tickell said:

"It’s outstanding that Glyndebourne has achieved the three star Industry Green rating. We’ve worked with Glyndebourne for five years now and have been continually delighted by the commitment and creativity shown to sustainability. Their magnificent wind turbine, which has allowed the venue to avoid 819 tonnes of CO2e makes them stand out as a leading innovator in the arts. Industry Green was developed to show that the creative industries can have a significant influence on sustainability opinion and action far beyond their own reach. It’s the work of the likes of Glyndebourne that prove this is the case”

This is the fifth year of Industry Green certification for Glyndebourne and in that time the organisation has worked hard to reduce its impact on the environment and has strived to achieve the highest possible rating. Measures implemented by Glyndebourne to help secure the 3 star rating include:

  • Engaging audience members with sustainable travel initiatives such as on-site electric car charging points and coaches to and from the local train station to encourage train travel over and above audiences driving to Glyndebourne.
  • Glyndebourne has embedded environmental criteria into its procurement procedures and has on-going engagement with suppliers and contractors to ensure they work towards the highest possible environment standards.
  • Energy emissions from electricity and non-normalised gas have decreased by 64%.
  • Glyndebourne has an innovative environmental strategy in place and has a committee of Environmental Champions from across the organisation who progress and identify further environmental change opportunities.
  • Glyndebourne achieved a remarkable 57% reduction in its emissions per performance due to the wind turbine meeting 89% of its electricity demand in 2012/2013.
