Glyndebourne’s Imago nominated for an RPS Music Award

Glyndebourne’s 2013 community opera, Imago, has been nominated for a prestigious Royal Philharmonic Society (RPS) Music Award.

Imago, composed by Orlando Gough with a libretto by Stephen Plaice, is nominated in the Learning and Participation category for a project which inspired participation in music-making and created high quality musical experience and understanding.

At the heart of Imago was a ninety-strong community chorus, ranged in age from teenagers to those in their eighties, some of whom had never been involved in music-making before, collaborating with professional artists.  In the orchestra pit community musicians were mentored, playing alongside professional musicians from Aurora Orchestra.

Imago had its world premiere on the main stage at Glyndebourne in March 2013, gave four sell out performances and was popular with audiences and critics alike. It was commissioned by Glyndebourne and Scottish Opera and made possible thanks to support from a number of individuals and organisations, including the National Lottery through Arts Council England, Beyond Borders from the PRS Foundation for Music, the MariaMarina Foundation and investment from Glyndebourne's New Generation Programme.

The RPS Music Awards, presented in association with BBC Radio 3, are the highest recognition for live classical music in the UK.  The Learning and Participation award is sponsored by the ABRSM, the exam board for the Royal Schools of Music.

The winners will be announced at an awards ceremony to be held at The Dorchester Hotel in London on Tuesday 13 May.
