It was with sadness that Glyndebourne has learnt of the death of Welsh soprano Dame Margaret Price who died of heart failure at the age of 69 on 28th January. Described by The Guardian as “one of the most beloved singers of her generation,” Dame Margaret Price made her operatic debut with Welsh National Opera as Cherubino in Le nozze di Figaro in 1962 and later stood in for Teresa Berganza at the Royal Opera House again as Cherubino, a performance which won her overnight fame.

Dame Margaret performed in venues all over the world, specialising in Mozart and the lighter Verdi roles. She appeared at Glyndebourne in 1966 as the Angel in Handel's Jephtha, then as Constanze in Die Entführung aus dem Serail in 1968 (and the revival in 1972) and in 1971 as Fiordiligi in Così fan tutte.

She was awarded the CBE in 1982 followed by the DBE in 1993.
