Feedback from our Tour 2013 Family Day 

Following the success of last year's Family Day, on Saturday 11 October Glyndebourne will again open its doors to young people and their companions for a peek behind the scenes into the workings of our world-class opera house. Learn more about the different crafts and skills involved in staging an opera, and explore some of the backstage areas usually hidden away to the public.

Glyndebourne Family Day 10am – 1:30pm

Songs About Us
Three fearless musicians take you through eight gripping stories set to music by some of the world’s greatest songwriters.
Venue: Ebert Room
Timings: 11am – Midday £7 for Adults, £4 for children

Gardening Department Showcase
Venue: Marquee
Timings: 10 – 10:15am
No pre-booking required.

The Glyndebourne gardening department will be demonstrating methods of selecting the right material for propagating cuttings of tender perennials. 

Using prime material selected by our expert gardening team, Kevin Martin (Head Gardener) will talk through the different stages of the process, offering some handy tips to maximise success!

Propagating Cuttings Workshop
Venue: Potting Shed and Greenhouse
Timings:
Session one: 10:30am – 11am
Session two: 11:30am – Midday

(Maximum capacity 10 people per session – there will be two workshops running concurrently at each of the session times).

Sign up for a session outside the potting shed from 10am.

The talk in the Marquee will be followed by an opportunity for participants to try out these skills in small groups under the guidance of Kevin Martin and John Hoyland (Glyndebourne’s Garden Adviser). Kevin and John will also be on hand to answer any general gardening questions.

Glyndebourne Garden Trail
Venue: The Gardens! (Starting at the Potting Shed)
Timings: Anytime between 10:30 – 1pm
No pre-booking required.

Collect your garden trail from the Potting Shed. This guide will help you explore the Glyndebourne gardens and discover the history behind Glyndebourne’s collection of exotic plants. The gardening team will be on hand to help!

History Talk
A talk on the history of Glyndebourne as a state of the art opera house.
Venue: The Organ Room
Timings:
Session one: 10:30am – 11am
Session two: 12 - 12:30pm
Session three: 1 – 1:30pm
No pre-booking required.

FREE entry (First come, first served due to limited capacity). Join us in the Organ Room to hear about Glyndebourne’s history from it’s beginning presenting concerts in The Organ Room to the state of the art theatre we see today.

Technical Department Showcase
Venue: Peter Hall Room
Timings: Anytime between 11am – 2:30pm
No pre-booking required.

The Glyndebourne technical departments will be showcasing the wide range of elements which they contribute towards creating the production for the stage. 

See behind the scenes of props, costume, make up, wardrobe, wigs, set building and stage management. 

Talk to the skilled Glyndebourne staff who create these elements, and have your face painted with stage make up.

On-Stage Technical Presentation
Venue: Main Auditorium
Timings: 12:30pm – 1pm
No pre-booking required.

FREE entry. Join us in the Stalls section of the Main Auditorium for a presentation from the stage hosted by Radio 3 broadcaster Sarah Lenton, giving a behind the scenes look at how the lighting and stage works towards making the operas as spectacular as possible.

La traviata Family Activities 

FREE to all family ticket holders for that afternoon's performance of La traviata, our Family Day will also include pre-performance activities ideal for those aged eight and above and their carers, providing an energetic introduction to the opera.

La traviata Family Workshop
Venue: Ebert Room
Timings: 1:30pm – 2:30pm
Pre-booking via the Box Office required.

FREE to all family ticket holders for that afternoon's performance of La traviata, our Family Day will include a pre-performance workshop led by Howard Moody. This event is ideal for those aged eight and above and their carers, providing an energetic introduction to the opera. Places are free but ticketed and must be reserved in advance.

Open Stage
Venue: Main Auditorium
Timings: 1:30 – 2:30pm
No pre-booking required.

FREE entry (First come, first served due to limited capacity). Join us on stage to discover close up the set of La traviata. Members of Stage Management will be on hand to explain the workings of the production and to answer your questions.

La traviata Pre-performance Talk
Venue: Ebert Room
Timings: 3pm – 3:30pm
Pre-booking via the Box Office required.

FREE to all ticket holders for that afternoon's performance of La traviata, our Family Day will include a pre-performance talk delivered by Radio 3 broadcaster Sarah Lenton. This talk is ideal for anyone wanting to explore La traviata a little further. Places are free but ticketed and must be reserved in advance.

Nether Wallop Restaurant
Timings: 12 – 2pm
The Nether Wallop restaurant will be open for pre-booked lunches.
Please contact Dining at Glyndebourne to make a reservation.

Mildmay
Timings: 10:30 – 4pm
The Mildmay restaurant will be open throughout the day serving light refreshments.

The Long Bar
Timings: Open from 10am
The Long Bar will be open throughout the day.

Due to demand from other customers seats are reserved for a maximum of 20 minutes in order to allow you to complete your purchase. If the order has not been completed within this time, all seats will be removed from your basket.
