Glyndebourne Autumn Sing with Mary King
Autumn Sing offers the chance for aspiring young singers to join renowned singing teacher and Glyndebourne Vocal Talent Consultant Mary King plus an exciting team of experienced opera professionals for three days of practical workshops each Autumn.
Dates: Saturday 21 October to Monday 23 October 2017
Time: 10.00am to 4.00pm
Location: Sussex Downs College, 1 Mountfield Road, Lewes, East Sussex, BN7 2XH
Based on Glyndebourne Academy, the programme is ideally suited to young singers (aged 14-19) with a desire to develop as soloists and explore operatic repertoire. Over three days Mary and her team explore a range of themes and look at some of the key skills singers need to master in opera, including vocal technique, performance and stagecraft, and singing in foreign languages.
The course is open to anyone who is aged between 14 and 19 for the course duration. There is an assumption that singers will be comfortable reading music, but extensive prior experience of opera or solo singing is not a prerequisite. Participating singers must be available to attend all three days of the course. You will be required to bring pre-prepared repertoire to work on during the course.
What you will need to prepare
- Two short pieces (maximum duration 3 minutes) to sing with piano accompaniment, one of which should be in English
- One song in Italian that you know – ideally an arie antiche from the 17th/18th centuries
Day 1: Vocal Technique
Mary King will be joined by professional coaches to help singers troubleshoot and fine tune their vocal technique.
Participants will work on their pre-prepared repertoire.
Day 2: Singing in Italian – how it can enhance your vocal skills
Alongside your chosen Italian aria we will look at one or two operatic choral segments and a scene in recitative in Italian which we will provide for you upon commencement of the course.
Day 3: Staging and Movement with Annabel Arden
Renowned opera director Annabel Arden, whose 2016 production of Il barbiere di Siviglia will be touring at Glyndebourne and around the U.K., will join Mary King and the team to work with singers on acting, movement and performance skills, both as soloists and as part of a company.
