Beethoven for Glyndebourne
“Rhythm belongs to the Spiritual....
Music gives to the mind its relation to Harmony...”
Beethoven to Bettina Brentano 1810
“These small sculptures are simply inspired by Beethoven’s Sonatas. Impossible to characterise, the idea was initiated by Berlioz’s remark that they were ‘poems unsay able in words’. Listening to many recordings of each piece and Andreas Schiff’s lectures I felt perhaps in all creative activity there is the unconscious at work – images come involuntarily to mind, did Beethoven compose a ‘Bild’ (a combination of picture, image and idea)? In a different medium I wondered could one imprint some reaction to the rhythm and to the harmony.
To the human spirit and imagination these works are often a challenge – mystical, profound, they go beyond the pattern of sound. They celebrate the spiritual development of man and these small figures are a humble sculptural response.”
