More than a cover story - art competition results 2013

Last year Glyndebourne launched its first ever art competition – to design the front cover of the Tour 2013 programme.

All entrants were asked to take one of this season’s operas as their inspiration and create a piece of art that could be used on the cover and hung as a piece of exhibition art in a gallery. In the spirit of the Tour, which since it started in 1968 has championed emerging talent, we asked that all entrants be under 30. The quality of the submitted artwork was very strong, with an overwhelming response from young artists, so the judges had their work cut out. Three great art lovers judged the competition: Gus Christie (Chairman of Glyndebourne), Lord Davies of Abersoch (Chairman of Trustees, Royal Academy) and Ros Roscoe, Glyndebourne’s Gallery Manager.

Jeremy Harnell’s winning artwork entitled Entdecken impressed the judges with its visually arresting, contemporary interpretation of Glyndebourne’s 2013 touring production of Hänsel und Gretel.  The piece draws on Glyndebourne’s sugar- saturated staging and suggestively hints at the danger lurking in the forest.

Jeremy Harnell (27) is a  music producer and graphic artist born in California, now based in south east England. In second place was Bristol-based Tess Redburn (24) with Another Dose, inspired by the love potion in L’elisir d’amore. The judges loved the colour, humour and precision of this piece. Inspired by Lucretia, in third place was Dorian Schwartz’s (21) colourfully, abstract work Boundaries.

In addition to the winning artists detailed above, the following entrants also made it onto this year’s shortlist: Irina Bernaz, Kieron Cropper, Héloîse Delègue, Jair Graham, Bradley Guy, Evie Kitt and Upam Lahkar. All shortlisted artists will be invited to exhibit their work at Glyndebourne (October) and the Towner art gallery in Eastbourne (November).

It is hoped that Glyndebourne’s Tour art competition will help nurture and reward artistic talent and raise the profile of young artists – mirroring the success and acclaim of the more well-known artists we feature on our Festival programme cover each year. Recent Festival programme book artists have included Grayson Perry, David Hockney and Michael Craig-Martin.
