Glyndebourne Youth Opera
GYO Autumn Workshops 2014
We are delighted to be able to offer everyone on the GYO mailing list the opportunity to take part in two exciting workshops this autumn. As ever, we hope to present all GYO members with the chance to discover and see opera differently.
This term we are delighted to have dynamic composer Howard Moody back with us again after he made a big impression on those lucky enough to work with him in the spring. Howard and Freya Wynn-Jones will be taking ‘Opera in a Day’ out on the road and presenting this ever-popular workshop as part of the Battle Arts Festival.
We are also excited to be able to offer something completely new to GYO members: the chance to go ‘behind the scenes’ here at Glyndebourne. The focus of GYO activity has always been what happens on stage, so the chance to discover the technical disciplines involved in making opera we hope will be of interest to many of our members. This should be a lot of fun!
You can book for both sessions if you wish to, but places are allocated on a strictly first-come-first-served basis. There are limited places per session, so book early to avoid disappointment.
‘Opera in a Day’ – GYO1 and GYO2

‘Behind the Scenes’ – GYO1 and GYO2

Led by Tycho’s Dream team Designer Bern O’Donoghue and Lighting Designer Clare O’Donoghue, and with input from Glyndebourne technical staff, the session will focus on design, costume, and lighting, with a chance to get hands-on with Glyndebourne’s world-class technical rig. There is a maximum of 30 places available for each workshop.

This year Glyndebourne Youth Opera (GYO) will be providing local young people with world-class performance opportunities and engaging opera workshops open to all.
We remain committed to enabling local young people to access unique world-class operatic experiences, with exceptional performance opportunities at the very heart of our programme. However, we are also keen to open up the GYO experience to more young people so we will no longer be operating a waiting list system.
There will be more opportunities for young people to get involved in GYO activity with a series of open access workshops offering the chance to build skills and learn more about opera. These will be open to anyone interested in joining GYO living within a 25 mile radius from Glyndebourne, and places will be allocated on a first come first served basis. Details of the workshop series will be posted on our website when available for booking, and we will notify you by email when this happens.
All GYO activity continues to be streamed according to age group. Those aged between 9 and 13 can enrol on GYO1 workshops or audition for GYO1 performance company, with GYO2 for those aged 14 to 19.
GYO performance projects have rightly earned a reputation for excellence, and places on these will always be in demand. Each year performance companies drawn from GYO1 and GYO2 get the chance to tackle challenging, exciting (and often new) repertoire under the expert tutelage of our Directors and Music Directors. In order to maintain this standard, and to be as fair as possible, places will always be allocated at audition on the basis of aptitude and suitability for the role. For those who haven’t been in a GYO performance company before it is a requirement that you attend at least one of our open workshops before you are eligible to audition.
If you would like to receive further details of GYO workshops and performance projects you can join the GYO mailing list and receive updates throughout the year.
